There’s a phrase that Paul’s says in his letter to the church in Corinth, that has been mulling around in my head as of late. The context of what he is saying, is around the hope that we have in the future for all believers in Jesus, the things that will inevitably happen leading to eternity in Heaven. But while we’re still on earth, he says this: “we make it our aim to please him” - 2 Corinthians 5:9 (ESV)

The Complete Jewish Bible words it this way: “we try our utmost to please him.” It’s a great reminder to keep the main thing, the main thing. God is the main thing! He is of absolute importance. He is ultimate above all else. Supreme overall.

Is our greatest aim in life to please Him?

We can fill our days with so much – even all the good things – but often we focus on what we want, or how we think things should be done. As believers, we are but mere vessels carrying the most precious gift of Grace and Truth inside of us. Our life’s purpose isn’t about us, but rather all about Him.

Have you noticed that when you love someone, you desire to please them? To do things for them. To quench your selfish desires and give them what they want. The same can be mirrored in our relationship with God. If we love Him, then we’ll desire to please Him. To serve Him. To put our ways aside and do what He’s asked us to do. To praise Him and bring Him glory. While this is not always easy to do, our aim or purpose in life will always draw us back to doing, being, living, thinking, speaking, loving in such a way that pleases Him.

Do we love Him in such a way that we desire to please Him?

Living a life that aims to please God, calls us to surrender to His Word and His Spirit in us. It’s not a choose-your-own adventure faith, but a humble, revering faith that responds with “Be it unto me, according to your will” (ref. Luke 1:38). Not according to my feelings, not according to my thoughts or my will. But according to the Words of life that come from the mouth of God, and the Spirit of God that resides in us.

Let’s make it our aim to be surrendered women who love Him and desire to please Him in all we think, say, and do.
